GENERAL ARTIST STATEMENT

My paintings deal with the dichotomy between reality and perception. They are carefully observed depictions of quotidian subjects transformed into unique images that express my emotional reaction to the subject. Although painted in a straightforward manner, with attention to detail, there is a considerable concern for formal issues. The compositions are carefully constructed and emphasize abstract relationships. Close cropping and the geometry of shapes intensify formal power. Color and light and shadow evoke mood.

I work from observation, memory and photos; but during the process, the needs of the painting take over and determine the final appearance. Both the formal issues and the concern with content are important in my work. Without them, realism would become merely illustration.

Often I repeat a subject many times until I feel I have internalized it. Variety and freshness in these series is achieved by using different media (oil paints, oil pastels and chalk pastels), as well as changing the sizes from large to extremely small.

For most of my painting career, my focus has been on architectural themes which is the subject matter of my current work. However, recently I did a series of clouds as well as one of still life objects.

I have had several one-person exhibitions, most recently at the Blue Mountain Gallery (four times), the Port Washington Library, the Interchurch Gallery and the Arts Club of Washington. I have been chosen for many important group shows, amongst them are the Butler Institute of American Art, two juried shows at the National Academy of Design, and also two at the New Jersey Center for the Visual Arts. At two exhibitions at the Heckscher Museum (Huntington, N.Y.), I have received the "Best in Show" award.

I received a BA from Wellesley College and did graduate work at Columbia University. My studio studies were at the National Academy of Design with Harvy Dinnerstein, at Queens College with Charles Cajori and with Shirley Gorelick.

The collections of Larry Rivers, Clation Partners and Techparners (CA) include my paintings.
